“Be vigilant at all times” Luke 21:36
Today marks the first day of Advent. In the gospel reading today from Luke 21, we are told to be vigilant. These two words stood out to me, “be vigilant”. What does it mean to be vigilant and why am I being called to do so during this season?
When I was a kid, my cousins, siblings and I played a game called King of the Mountain. If you were the king you had to be very aware of all the angles to make sure no one would make it to the top and knock you off the mountain (or small dirt hill, or perhaps a bed).
How does this vigilance relate to my spiritual journey this Advent?

We should always be vigilant in guarding our hearts from things of the world that cause spiritual death. This is especially true during Advent. As we prepare our hearts, it is important to be aware of what steals our time from preparing it, what causes us to sin cluttering it, and what leads us to spiritual drowsiness.
Today, I invite you to reflect on what things during Advent fill your heart so that there is no room for Christ when He comes. Let this awareness keep you vigilant during this season so that you can guard your heart from unwanted occupancies.
