Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. Matthew 8:8
Who is worthy?
For a good competition, you need two worthy opponents. Worthy, as in they both are equally matched for the competition. If someone received a promotion, he/she was most likely worthy of the promotion – in the eyes of the manager. If a parent rewarded a child for some good deed or good grades, the child was likely worthy of the reward.
What is necessary to be worthy for Christ to enter within our hearts?
If I’m a good Christian, helping and praying for others, going to church, etc., shouldn’t I be worthy for Christ to dwell within me?
Some may say yes, others no. Perhaps a contradictory question. This may have also been contradictory during Jesus’ time. From the gospel reading in Matthew 8, sounds like the Centurian understood it. His humility and faith are great examples for us today. He knew he wasn’t worthy based on his lifestyle, but he also had faith in Jesus and knew that Jesus could heal his servant.
What does that mean for us today on day 2 of Advent?
It’s a time to reflect on why we aren’t worthy and focus on the hope of the gift God gives us this Christmas through His love and mercy. We need to be ready to fully receive the gift.
To begin this season, it’s important to inventory what is in our hearts and where it is focused? What sins cloud our hearts where Jesus wants to dwell? What areas do we need to work on to imitate Him in our Christian living? How can we be witnesses to discipleship this season to share the Good News?

This is part of our preparation. Christ is coming this Christmas and He is looking for a place to lay His head. Will your heart be available or will there be no space in the Inn?
Today, I invite you to reflect on what you need to do to cleanse your heart and prepare a dwelling for Christ this Christmas.
