The messenger

“I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me.”

Malachi 3:1

Wow, I can’t believe Christmas is almost here.  These last four weeks have flown by.  In today’s readings from Malachi chapter 3 and Luke chapter 1, we here about a messenger and the birth of John the Baptist.

“I am sending MY messenger to PREPARE the way for me”

We have been in the midst of preparations.  Some preparing for small family gatherings, others a little different celebration of quiet and solitude.

Often times the season can get away from us with all the external preparations. What about internal preparations?

Advent is a wonderful four weeks of preparing our hearts to welcome Christ.  It’s a time to listen to the messenger and to also be the messenger to those who do not know Christ.  It’s a time of purifying our hearts, just as the “refiner’s fire” purifies precious metal and the “fuller’s lye” cleanses and whitens cloth.  It’s a time of emptying the vessel of all the stuff we hold within so that we can humbly welcome Christ.

Whether you are embracing family members or you are embracing quiet and solitude this Christmas, I invite you to first embrace the messenger and make room for Christ in the depths of your heart.  Let the peace of a purified heart wash over you today as you anticipate the next few days to welcome the greatest gift you will ever receive.

Many blessings to you today.
