“Whatever you are doing, that which makes you feel the most alive…that is where God is.”
St Ignatius
Ever played the game I spy as a kid or even as an adult? I confess to both. When you play I spy, someone spies something in the room of a certain color and gives you only the color as a hint while you try to find what it is they spied.
Ever feel like your spiritual life is similar? Everyone around you has spied God and you are trying to search the room for Him.

When I first began my spiritual journey, Ignatian spirituality drew me in. St ignatius discovered something very intriguing and worth paying attention to. As he was recovering from a war injury he noticed that when he read and imagined a life of chivalry he was fulfilled for a short time. But when he read the life of Christ or the saints and imagined a life of doing God’s work, he was fulfilled for longer periods of time.
He felt alive.
I’ve often mentioned that through spiritual direction, I’ve been taught to pay attention to things that bring me life as these are the moments and paths where God is present.
Last week I had a trial of mother/daughter, teenage/adult tension. Several days later, I went to speak to my daughter in her room and discovered she was reading her Bible, journaling and writing verses on sticky notes. As we began to talk, she told me that after our disagreement, she noticed that as she listened more to Christian music she found herself feeling more joyful and that her friends even commented at school that she seemed happy.
This conversation was a witness to my daughter that God truly is found in these spaces that make us feel alive. Not just at church, in a sacred place, or during prayer time. He can be in any space and at anytime.
Each of us can “spy God” in the room, it just takes openness and attentiveness to those things that fill us with life.
I invite you to pause for a moment sometime during your day, perhaps at the end. Reflect on the scenery throughout the day, the sounds you were listening to, the people you engaged with and the aromas that you smelled. Did anything in your day fill you with great joy, peace, life?

Thanks as always for your beautiful reflection. It will help me stay more attentive so I don’t overlook those moments! 🙏✝️
