Harmony in hope

“Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid. The calf and the young lion shall browse together with a little child to guide them.  The cow and the bear shall be neighbors…”

Isaiah 11:6-8

As I read Isaiah 11:1-10 this morning, I’m reminded of my childhood, playing with the barn animals at my grandma’s. As a kid, it didn’t matter if the cow and the bear were neighbors or the baby lion and a calf were playing in a field together. As a child all things belonged together in harmony no matter what the world outside of that playtime said.

In today’s gospel (Luke 10:21), Jesus tells us that some things are hidden from the wise and revealed to the childlike. Perhaps, he means that there are simple truths of peace and harmony that only a childlike mind could understand.

As we prepare this week, we are being invited to hope in those simple truths.  To hope in a family, in a savior that will be born who is sent not only for the lamb but also for the wolf that resides in each of us and in our neighbors. He will bring love, joy and peace in this journey of Advent.

Reflect on what it was like as a child playing and allow the peaceful harmony of your childlike memories reveal to you the things that Jesus is inviting you to see and hear this season.
